Nottingham

Nottingham is a significantly ancient city, set right in the heart of England. Further north than Leicester, but still in the midlands, the name Nottingham is derived for a time when the area fell under the rule of a Saxon chieftain who’s name was ‘Snot’ when the city became known as “Snotingaham”; the homestead of Snot’s people. The ‘S’ was dropped some years later, long after the Saxon chieftain left the area.

Nottingham is famed for reputedly being the home of the Robin Hood – the man of legends, and today one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions is Tales of Robin Hood centre.

Nottingham, like its relatively close neighbour Leeds, boasts some of England’s oldest pubs, including one which claims it is the oldest called the Trip to Jerusalem. This public house which apparently dates from the year 1189AD and occupies a number of caves beneath the remains of Nottingham Castle.

Moving forward to the 21st Century and Nottingham offers some of the greatest shopping opportunities for those living in Britain, but outside London. The city offers visitors and residents a massive number of superb bars, theatres, museums, restaurants, pubs, clubs, music venues, and a really wide variety of places of significant historic interest.

As both an ancient city, and a vibrant centre of modern British life, Nottingham is the place to be because that there is something that will suit all tastes and all budgets. You’ll find that it’s also pretty much bang in the centre of England, and with access to it from just off the M1 motorway (the main arterial route up and down the country) it’s incredibly easy to get to from most major cities, such as Bristol, Leciester, or even Glasgow and Edinburgh – in fact, pretty much anywhere in the UK.

If you’re an avid walker, Nottingham is handily close to the awesome Peak District – an area which arguably is the rose in the English countryside, showing the area at its most picturesque. Nottinghamshire itself is a marvellous and attractive area with a number of beautiful walks.

For the young and trendy Nottingham’s nightclubs and night scene is also exceptional and amongst the region’s liveliest. For the fashion conscious, the vast shopping centre is a massive draw for anyone who loves to shop.
